Origin

Calla is native to the swamps of South Africa and was discovered as early as the 18th century. Within the genus Zantedeschia there are several species, but the best known are the aethiopica and rehmannii. The aethiopica has large, white flowers and feels at home in the garden as a perennial. The colorful rehmannii, created by crosses with other species, comes in many shades, but is not hardy. After winter, during which it dies off above ground, it comes back to life in spring and blooms again.

Tips from the grower

Location: Calla likes a spot at room temperature (max. 20°C) with adequate shade. Avoid direct sunlight in a south or southwest window, which is too hot for her.

Watering: Water your Calla once or twice a week, but be careful not to leave excess water in the pot. Dry roots will keep her most content.

Outside on the terrace: In the summer months, your Calla can be fine outside, it can even tolerate full sun. But beware, in the winter it has to go inside because it can’t take frost.

FAQ

The Calla can stand in sunlight as well as in a spot of semi-shade. Avoid direct sunlight in summer as it can burn its leaves.

Water the Calla once or twice a week, taking care not to leave the roots in excess water.

This is called “guttation,” or sweating of the leaves. This means it is absorbing more water than it can evaporate. Reduce watering and try a sunnier location.

Unfortunately, your Calla has contracted a bacterial infection and will not recover. The best thing to do is to say goodbye to your plant.

This can happen as it prepares for its fall hibernation. Water less and let the plant die quietly. In the spring, it will come back to life!
