The Kentia

The strong, stylish addition to any interior

The Kentia palm, or Howea forsteriana, is one of the easiest and strongest houseplants you can have. With her elegant, long leaves, you instantly bring a touch of the tropics into your home without her needing much attention. She feels at home in an area with indirect light, which makes her perfect for shadier areas such as your living room, hallway or even an office. This palm can even survive in a dorm room! The Kentia also has great air-purifying properties, so she is not only beautiful, but also contributes to a fresh, healthy living environment.

In the late 19th century, the Kentia palm became wildly popular, especially in England. Queen Victoria was a huge fan and made sure this plant could be found in all her homes and palaces. Luxury hotels soon followed suit and had the Kentia in their lobbies. With its graceful, green leaves, give your interior that same stylish look!

Origin

The Kentia palm is native to Lord Howe Island, a paradise island near Australia, famous for its white beaches and tropical flora. This is the only place in the world where the Kentia grows naturally. The seeds are hand-picked and sown on the island, then the young plants go to growers like Dynaplant. Thus, your Kentia palm is literally a world traveler!

Officially called Howea forsteriana, this palm belongs to the palm family (Arecaceae). There is also a smaller variety, Howea belmoreana, but it is not grown as a houseplant. So the forsteriana is the Kentia you see in your home or office.

Tips from the grower

Location: The Kentia palm likes a place with indirect light or shade. Do not put it in full sun, especially not on a windowsill facing southwest, as this can damage its leaves.

Watering: The Kentia likes a slightly moist soil. Always keep the potting soil slightly moist, but be careful not to leave water at the bottom of the pot, as too much water can cause root rot. It is better to water small amounts, on average every five days in summer. In winter, it needs less water; once every week and a half is sufficient.

Moisture check: Doubting whether your Kentia is getting enough water? Stick your finger in the soil or use a moisture meter. If the soil still feels wet after four days, water a little less. Is the soil already dry quickly? Then your plant needs a little more water.
