How Dynaplant
makes a difference
The Future
and goals
The future holds many sustainable challenges, but one thing is certain: houseplants will remain an essential part of our lives. As the world gets busier, so does the need for a piece of nature in the home. At Dynaplant, we believe that a green interior contributes to a healthy and pleasant living environment. That is why we are committed to growing our plants in the most socially responsible and sustainable way possible. Our goals? To grow largely peat-free plants by 2025 and to reduce our CO₂ emissions by 12.5% within five years.
Energy-neutral cultivation
Corporate sustainability is deeply embedded in Dynaplant’s core values. We continually invest in environmentally and socially responsible solutions.
Our goal is to keep the carbon footprint as low as possible. Growing in glass greenhouses allows us to make the best use of the sun’s heat, which is retained in the greenhouse. This provides natural energy savings compared to outdoor cultivation. In winter, we use various heat sources to keep the greenhouses warm.
CHP
plant
Our Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHP) efficiently converts gas into heat and electricity. This electricity powers our grow lights, especially during the darkest days.
Deployment of geothermal heat
We use a geothermal well 3 kilometers deep to pump hot water. This reduces our need for fossil fuels by 20%.
Use of waste heat
To supplement our heat supply, we use residual heat from a nearby nursery. Through underground pipes, this excess heat is transported to our greenhouses, reducing our dependence on fossil energy.
ExcessCO2 as growth accelerator
We are connected to OCAP’s CO₂ network, which collects excess CO₂ from heavy industries in the Port of Rotterdam and transports it to our greenhouses. This CO₂ is used by our plants during photosynthesis, where they convert CO₂ into oxygen. This reduces industrial CO₂ emissions and helps our plants grow faster and healthier.
Water conservation and reuse
On our greenhouse area of 75,000 m², we collect rainwater, which is stored in water basins and silos. We use this water to irrigate our plants. The excess water that is not absorbed by the plants is purified and reused. Thus, we work with a closed water system and do not waste a drop. Only our plumbing uses tap water.
Biological protection
To protect our crops from insect pests, we use biological control agents whenever possible. These include predatory mites that target harmful insect larvae, drastically reducing the use of chemical pesticides. In addition, we maintain strict hygiene, so diseases are recognized early and chemical interventions are often unnecessary. At Dynaplant, prevention is better than cure.
Sustainable packaging
We have been transporting our plants in plastic pots and trays for years. Whereas previously these were “virgin plastics” (newly produced plastic), we now use recycled plastic granules, derived from household and industrial waste streams. We continue to explore new, more sustainable packaging options, such as paper sleeves, to make our transportation even more environmentally friendly.
